I recently finished Andy Oram's Peer-to-Peer : Harnessing the Power of Disruptive Technologies and found it to be a great introduction to P2P technology and its potential. I highly recommend it as an introduction to the subject of P2P. It was published in the spring of 2001 when P2P = Napster for most people, but it still maintains its freshness.
Posted by dan at March 9, 2004 02:43 AMhey man.
you're probably going to kill me. but i still don't understand
if you're doing a proposal for the interaction design of a p2p video
replacement for TV... or if it is a complete (hardware-software)
solution for a community oriented, digital, intelligent and customizable and real time
"search engine" for TV content... or both?...
still... before designing anything... i would like to know
where, how and why would i use your project
1. as a content viewer and 2. as a content provider.
that will give you the answer to all the design rules you
need to establish...
shit man. i don't think i'm helping...
peace out.

Posted by: diego at March 10, 2004 06:03 PMHey Diego-
There's good reason you're confused.
Thanks for the post and the question. Indeed, you are helping. You've caused me to ruminate on what I've done thus far so I'm writing up an answer that's probably more verbose than you might have expected or desired.
The short answer to which of your options this is: both.
I know you've been tracking my progress on this project for some weeks now and what I'm working on with it has changed over that time. I started out in January proposing to work on the whole hardware/software solution thinking, not that I could design a complete platform, but that I could put together the key characteristics of such a system and build some sort of a rudimentary prototype.
Then I decided to work primarily on the interaction design side of such a system on the preliminary recommendation of R.G. However, I began to feel that work on this aspect was premature as the design of the platform needed to be pushed forward before I could figure out how people would interact with it.
Since then, I've come to the conclusion that I'd like to write up some documentation of the key features of such a system and build out some more concrete specifications of a part of that system. Right now, I'm focusing on the classification of media in the system that would allow for effective sorting and distribution of that media. My hope is that once I complete some work on this phase, I'll be able to further define how users would interact with the system.
That said, this blog is serving as a repository for all of the ideas i have about my dream platform, whether or not they're specifically related to my thesis, so the content here may not have much to do with the portion of the work I'm doing for my thesis project.
So...the answers to your questions about why people would use the platform are not easy, but I agree with you that developing some specific answers will help me to move forward. As to how and why you would use my project as a content viewer - because the content suits your tastes better than content produced for mass-audiences. Sure, not as much money will be behind the production, but since distribution is so cheap and since content is better matched with the needs and wants of the viewer, it will be desirable to watch it. I'm not suggesting that massive-media will replace mass media. The 2 types of media will live side-by-side. I love some big-budget movies that really need those big budgets to get produced. There's some great TV out there now too. And there's great value in media becoming shared experiences of big chunks of society. I mean, you need something to talk about around the water cooler, right? But I think that some of the time viewers spend watching stuff that they look to as filler - shows that they don't love but they watch since they're mildly entertaining, could be replaced by media that better suits their needs. And this platform won't stop with the media formats we're used to watching on TV either. Free-form video and audio, interactive pieces, community announcements and bulletin boards could also be hosted. This won't replace what we're used to as much as it will augment it. Furthermore, much of the media we see on television is worse than it could be only because the distributors needed to create it in a certain way so that commercial messages could be fit into the mix. If a better option were to come along, I hope that people - both artists and media consumers - would check it out.
And as to your second question, why content providers would use it: because it's a cheaper way of getting your media distributed. With massive-media, more people will have the opportunity to have their work distributed and the barriers to entry are lower. So the risks are lower; if no one likes their stuff, no one will watch it and all they lose are the costs of making the content. If people like it, it could get distributed more widely. I haven't yet fully figured out a payment structure, though I've been thinking about the topic and I think there are some options. However, with media getting so easy to produce (think Final Cut, Pro Tools, and 3ds max) and people loving having their stuff seen by lots of other people, I think there is impetus enough to get things started.
Hope this answered your questions a bit. I look forward to hearing more of what you think.
